Mission Statement

To create an accepting environment and opportunities for empowering children and youth and encouraging a positive attitude for personal growth.

Children’s programming is a very large part of what we do at South Vancouver Neighbourhood House. Not only do we have programs that are on-going throughout the year such as our out-of-school care and Poppins Preschool (September – June), but we operate several shorter term programs at various times during the year and a summer daycamp as well. For specific information on our children’s programming see the information below.

Hello World Day Camp

Fun and enriching experiences for children ages 6 - 12. Activities include: sports, games, arts and crafts, music, swimming, and special events such as Playland, Splashdown and Watermania.

2010 Schedule - 2 week sessions, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday:
July 5-16
July 19-30
Aug. 9-20
(Please note 1 week sessions are available for $100 if space is available)

Cost: $180/2 week session

Membership to SVNH required ($2.00/child)

Poppins Preschool

10 month program for 3-5 year olds from September to June.
Each program has 2 qualified and licensed preschool teachers. Children in our care are acknowledged and supported for their individual abilities, interests and cultural backgrounds. We offer daily art, science, math activities, music and movement, variety of imaginative plays and more.

Program Highlights: fun family phonics, newly created science area, monthly cooking/baking activities, daily outdoor time, music and movement area, cozy comfort corner for resting and reading, parent waiting room.

Benefits we see emerging from play: initiative, satisfaction and confidence; social skills; skills in manipulating and coordinating; language and expression; mastering basic concepts; increased curiosity and discovery.

4 year olds – Mon., Wed., Fri. afternoons 12:15-2:45 pm
3&4 year olds – Tues., Thurs mornings 9:30-11:45 am

4 yr. old class: $120/month

Out-Of-School Care

Childcare program for school aged children Gr. 1-7 and all day kindergarten.  Care also available for all professional development days.  Summer care available.

7:15 – 9:00 am and 3:00-6:00 pm Monday-Friday

7:15-6:00 pm on school holidays, professional days and full time summer session (July & August)

Homework Havens

Offered for children/youth who are looking for help with their studies or just needing a place to do their homework. Students receive assistance from trained SVNH staff and volunteers. Program includes one hour of homework and thirty minutes recreation time. Snacks and drinks are also provided.

Monday - Tecumseh School, 3:00-4:45, Gr. 4-7
Tuesday - Moberly School, 3:11-4:45, Gr.4-7
Wednesday - Cook & MacCorkindale Schools 3:05-4:45, Gr.4-7
Thursday - Fleming School, 3:05-4:45, Gr.4-7

Cost:  $20.00/school term (approximately 8-10 weeks)

Cultural Buddy Program

This program "buddies" up new immigrant secondary and elementary schoolyouth with more established immigrant secondary school youth speaking the same first language. Both on-site and off-site programs and activities offered.

Offered at Fleming, Douglas, Cook, Tecumseh Elementary Schools and David Thompson and Killarney Secondary Schools in South Vancouver from October - May.

Summer Program:
8-12 yr old program. Tues. & Thurs. 2:00-5:00 p.m.
July 6,8, 13, 15, 20, 22nd
Aug. 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26

13-18 yr old program Wed. 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.
July 7, 14, 21
Aug. 11, 18, 25

Friday night dinner and movie for any 8-12 or 13-18 yr. old registered participants runs 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Families are welcome.)

Cost: FREE with $2.00 SVNH annual membership

Vietnamese Children's Language Classes

Provides Vietnamese language instruction to children through group reading club and connects children to their Vietnamese heritage
