Seniors' Programming

seniors

The first floor of the Neighbourhood House, from Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. is dedicated to seniors' programming and services only. Information and referral is offered as well as a weekly blood pressure clinic (Thursdays 10:30-11:30 a.m.) and monthly outtrips or special lunches. Other agencies have also joined us to offer language specific seniors' activities.

We offer programs, services and volunteer opportunities for Seniors within our South Vancouver community, and always welcome new members. Feel free to telephone – or even just drop by – for program or resource information, for one of our services or activities, or for a cup of coffee and a chat.

We are happy to provide information on available seniors’ services and programs, accessing service or help accessing service, referral to other groups or agencies and support for those who need it. What really helps is that we are well connected to partners in the South Vancouver Community, and know whom to call if further information is needed.

Seniors' Peer Support

Volunteers are needed for our Seniors Peer Support Program for homebound seniors living in South East Vancouver. We need caring, compassionate volunteers. Here's how you can help:
1. Friendly Visitor/Walking Companion - visit an isolated senior in their home or take them for a walk to provide companionship and a meaningful social opportunity. (Criminal record check required.)
2. Hello Neighour/Safety Line Caller - a brief, daily phone call from you provides a sense of safety and friendship. Three to ten minutes per day from the comfort of your own home is your only commitment.

Volunteer training will be provided to enhance personal development, interpersonal skills and knowledge in aging related local resources. A better and healthier neighbourhood is to be built by many "Good Samaritans". Many isolated seniors are invisible and need to be re-connected with local communities. You can make a difference!

South Vancouver Seniors Council

The Seniors' Council is a dedicated group of seniors who provide advocacy to seniors in Southeast Vancouver in a number of ways. We hold information sessions on issues affecting seniors; we identify assets and gaps in community services/programs and produce a newsletter highlighting the efforts of volunteers and examples of best practices within the community. We are in the midst of some very interesting work assisting in the development of a seniors centre in Southeast Vancouver and collaborating with other seniors and senior organizations on a transportation strategy for this area.

We are looking for senior women and menn 55+ from all cultures with specific skills or experience in newsletter production, fundraising, serving on a board, public speaking and advocacy. We offer monthly orientation, training, support and recognition. If you have time and energy and would like to use your existing skills, please contact us.
